Little Eden Society (001-827NPO) cares for 290 children and adults with profound mental handicap; the majority of whom were previously abandoned or came from indigent families. Some are HIV positive or have AIDS. Dealing with the terminally ill or dying forms part of the work carried out at LITTLE EDEN. The mission of the Society is to develop these special people to their full potential and to encourage the community to see each individual as a complete person with a mind…, a body…, a spirit and a soul, despite their (sometimes multiple) disabilities. Story About Ficksburg
Melanie is the official ambassador for Little Eden, a home for the mentally and physically handicapped, and she does a lot of fundraising for them, and spends time with them when she can. In November Melanie did several performances at the Cherry Festival in Ficksburg in the Free State, near the Lesotho border. She was disappointed that she would be unable to attend Little Eden’s year end concert on the Saturday morning, as the drive to Johannesburg and back would have been too long, and Melanie needed to be back in Ficksburg in time for another performance later on Saturday. There would be no way for the home to explain to the children why Melanie wouldn’t be able to be there. When the festival committee heard about this, without saying anything to Melanie, they organized for a business in Ficksburg, Saviour Freight & Logistics to sponsor a flight for Melanie to Johannesburg and back, so that she could attend the function. It was a single engine 4 seater plane. This was the first time Melanie had flown in such a small aircraft, and she was terrified! This was made worse by going through 4 storms on the way back! It was well worth it however, as the children from Little Eden were so excited about their ‘friend’ Melanie being there, that she was constantly showered with hugs! Melanie was overwhelmed by the kindness of the sponsor making this possible – these handicapped children and adults have very little in their lives, so to have their ‘friend’ there was a huge highlight for them – just to know that someone cares, and comes to visit.
