Russian Romanticism
The unique opening drum rolls of Rossini's melodic overture announce the start of our season, which begins on a high note with gifted Russian siblings Olga and Vladimir Kern. Olga makes a welcome return to our stage for a double bill of Rachmaninov concertos, which showcase the skill and technical mastery of both composer and soloist.

Accomplished conductor Omri Hadari begins his three-concert engagement in grand style, preparing to carry the audience along on the glorious tide of sound created by the lyrical drama and sweeping grandeur of extraordinary works by Bruch and Bruckner. Lauded for her expressive and rich tone, violinist Sarah Oates joins the maestro on stage for this her debut concert with the KZNPO.

Polyphony of Sound
Tchaikovsky amplifies the scale and emotional range of the classical concerto and provides a fitting debut for dynamic young Israel-based pianist Boris Giltburg. The orchestra is then set the challenge of Mahler's monumental Fifth Symphony, which calls on every technical and musical resource of the musicians.

A pictorial conclusion to the Summer season. The KZNPO's principal horn player takes centre stage for our final concert and, under the baton of the highly regarded Victor Yampolsky, explores the technical and expressive possibilities of the horn with Strauss's Second Horn Concerto.

Music lovers can enjoy extra elements of the concert-going experience by attending the orchestra's Morning Symphony and Pre-Concert Talks.

Morning Symphony
The perfect way to start your day! Join the KZNPO for the final rehearsal on the day of the concert and catch a glimpse of the techniques, insights and preparation which go into making a concert.
Morning Symphony Open Rehearsals take place at the venue of the concert on the day of the concert at 10.00 with the exception of concerts where singers are involved. Entrance is free for subscribers, and R15 for non-subscribers and includes a cup of tea.

Pre-Concert Talks
Every WSS concert is preceded by a musically illustrated introductory talk presented by the Friends of Music Society. These talks are designed to enlighten and entertain, and each speaker is an authority on their subject. You will find this to be a worthwhile 30 minutes. The talks are open to all concert-goers and are held at the Royal Hotel from 18.15 to 18.45. Pay at the door.
